Debi Kohler

I have been very blessed to have two mothers, who actually like each other. At my wedding shower, they introduced themselves as mother # 1 and mother #2.

My biological mother (#1), Sue, raised me until age 5, and then again at 17, about six months before I set out on my own. We were more like best friends than mother and daughter.

My step-mother (#2), Carol, raised me other than those years. I was very fortunate to have another mother who loved me as if I was her own and took very good care of me.

I’m not sure exactly when my biological mother became aware of her lump! in her breast, but she took the ostrich approach, burying her head in the sand. She did not go to her gynecologist, or any other doctor for that matter. Her breast cancer eventually grew into bone cancer, which spread throughout her body and she lost her battle with it in 2000.

Mom # 2 found a lump in 1999, but she took a different approach. She went to her gynecologist, then to an oncologist. They did a lumpectomy and for nine years she was good. This past March, 2009, she found another lump in the same breast as before. This time, she had a mastectomy, along with breast reconstruction. She is half-way through chemo and has lost her hair. She is planning a breast reduction for the good breast early next year, and a cruise to Alaska in August, 2010.

It just goes to show that if you think something is wrong, you need to have it checked out immediately. I would love to still have both of my mothers. Treatments have come such a long way in a very ! short period of time. We have options. We need to take advantage.

I dont know if I ever thanked you for your words of encouragement. If I did I am sorry for not remembering, and if I didnt I am sorry for taking so long to do so. First let me say that I received all my test results back about a week ago, "all clear". I am a single parent raising two boys, 9 and 5 and the thought of that type of battle ahead for us was just to much. I commend you for doing what you are doing to raise awareness. My heartfelt prayers go out to all those that visit your site that have not gotten the "all clear". Thank you so very much for just listening to me,  I was afraid to tell my family, because I am considered the "rock"   Thank you for hearing me!!!!!!  Thank you Athena Smith  aka "zionsma"

I am inquiring about the fundraiser on 10/18/09 at Paris Salon & Spa.  I just spoke with someone at the salon about donating a basket for the fundraiser, but I have a few more questions, so she directed me to contact you.  First, let me introduce myself, I am an independent candle distributor for Mia Bella Gourmet Candles by Scent-Sations.  If it is ok, I definitely would love to donate a basket.  I also would be interested in setting up a display on this day to help raise some more funds.  I had the scare of possibly having breast cancer in 1999 right before I became pregnant with our second son.  Thank goodness it turned out to be a non-cancer cyst!  This really hits close to home for me personally!  Thank you so much for reading my email.  Please either give me a call or an email back when you get a chance.  Take care and I look forward to hearing back from you shortly!

Got a call from the hospital yesterday, they want me to have some digital scan instead of a regular mamo'. does anyone know what this new scan is, and what makes it better than the old smash your girls between two plates. I have had the ultrasound, and the original mamo, now this! And they tell you not to worry!!!! How do you not?

It is so nice to know that someone took time enough to offer support. It has been a struggle trying to move on without my loved one, but that's just me being selfish because she's in a much better place. I wish it was a way to find a cure instead of just treatments. That's just my opinion! To all others who have lost a loved one to breast cancer, may God bless you and your families and you all are always in my prayers. I pray for your strength as well. God Bless!

This journey is not an easy one, but the women that I know who have fought this fight are the strongest women I know. In my family there have been 8 women (4 generations) who have fought hard, some are still fighting. And, last night I lost a frien...d to breast cancer. Don't EVER give up the fight!

Hi. God bless you all! I am a surgical technologist, since 71. and have helped with this care from first biopsy to the reconstructin surgery, in a high school class of 25, here in Maine, 4 of my classmates have had breast cancer, this seems way above the norm. My prayers are with you all.

Also says that as a nudist, and proud member of aanr, i have seen and met several women who have opted for reconstructive surgery and several who have not. Both wear the superficial scars of survival proudly and through the naturist community are ab...le to heal the invisible scares through the love respect acceptance and support of their naturist families. You all rock.
